Traffic Paint:

Water Borne Traffic Paints: Starting in 1978 with applications of waterborne traffic paints in several nationally recognized road tests, I was involved in every major aspect of the industry conversion from solvent borne to water borne traffic paints. That has included the development of compatible application equipment. I have formulated water borne coatings that have been used in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Australia and Europe. I was involved with Rohm and Haas from 1994 with the application and formulation of products based on HD-21 and HD-21A. We pioneered the use or IER technology to speed the drying times of these products 10 years ago with a product line called Sahara.

Solvent Borne Systems: Starting with the Prismo Safety Corporation in the early 1970’s I was involved in all aspects of the development of the earliest 20 to 60 second dry solvent borne traffic paints both cold and hot applied as well as the application Technology needed. I am the author of U.S. Patent 4.025,476. I have formulated traffic paints based on solution acrylics, alkyd resins, chlorinated rubber, Styrene Acrylates and more. These products have been used throughout North and South America and Europe. Many of these products are now considered “old School”, but still have applications here and abroad.

Thermoplastic:

Thermoplastic Pavement Marking: I helped pioneer spray thermoplastic along with the machinery to apply it. The first granular thermoplastic was produced by the Prismo Safety Corporation at that time as well. I helped pioneer the first lead free thermoplastic in the early eighties and many unique formulations used in Europe, the Middle East, Argentina and Brazil with Cleanosol and other Prismo Licensee’s. We manufactured the first non hydrocarbon Classic Alkyd granulated material and introduced the first elastomeric reinforced product designed for application in areas where severe winters are commonplace. I developed the formulations and was responsible the first commercial use of double encapsulated lead chromate pigments in granulated thermoplastics. These products reduced lead chromate exposure risk below OSHA acceptable levels.

Preformed Tapes:
1. I was responsible for the development of the first reflectorized permanent tapes. We utilized an in house developed plural component urethane top coat to enhance this process five years later. I developed temporary tapes for use in construction zones. All of these projects where developed in house and consisted of base films, top coats and where necessary adhesive development.

2. I formulated and managed the development of LDI’SPreformed heat applied thermoplastic tape line in all colors. The initial development project went from the lab to commercialization in 18 months.

Multi Component Systems:
In 1980 along with Richard Gurney I developed the first fast drying plural component epoxy pavement marking material. The application machinery and the material where developed in concert. We made both components in house. We produced and marketed peroxide catalyzed Polyester products and several polyurethane systems which were successful in many application trials but where too expensive for the market even in early the 2000’s.
